LAND 2023

EcoArt brought their colourful environmental art project ‘LAND’ to Stranraer Harbour during Spring Fling and the Dumfries river festival, Nithraid during 2023.

Continuing to journey along the Solway coast, for the third year running, ‘LAND’ toured coastal towns in Dumfries and Galloway collecting signalling flags as it went. Prior to the events, local artists hosted a series of open workshops in Gatehouse of Fleet, Whithorn, Port Logan and Stranraer where participants designed and made flags that carried environmental messages.

The flags are added to the growing collection which are flown at events in a colourful, visually stunning display. These flags and designs are archived to record this pivotal time in history.  Inspired by the International Maritime Signals Code, the flags are a creative way of signalling the feelings of communities concerning the huge environmental challenges facing us all as well as their hopes for the future.

“This is a really exciting and imaginative way for people to express their environmental concerns and hopes and to raising the flags and their voices on crucial environmental issues.” EcoArt Trustee Rose Petal Hall

For many participants this was their first introduction to active engagement with the subject. ‘LAND’ attempts to enable reflection on the current environmental crisis and to inspire ecologically positive action in its participants, collaborators and audiences.
